Natusport Beta Alanine is a non-essential amino acid that is converted in the body into carnosine. Carnosine occurs naturally in the muscles and plays a role during explosive sports efforts.
During intense exercise, the formation of hydrogen ions (H⁺) in the muscles increases. This causes acid build-up in the muscles, which is associated with the familiar burning and fatigued feeling during heavy exertion. Carnosine is a substance naturally present in muscle tissue that absorbs hydrogen ions and can therefore help reduce acid build-up.
When beta-alanine is taken over a longer period, the carnosine concentration in the muscles can increase. For this reason, it is widely used by athletes who train at high intensity, such as in strength training, sprinting, interval training, CrossFit, Hyrox, and team sports involving repeated explosive efforts.
A well-known and harmless side effect of beta-alanine is a temporary tingling sensation, paraesthesia, usually in the hands, arms, or legs. This effect can be reduced by spreading the daily dosage over multiple intake moments, preferably together with meals.
